Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?
Tales & Tokens (T&T) is being developed with the aim of becoming a platform for building highly sustainable, transparent, and interoperable services by using NFTs (NFT as a Service). Because it takes advantage of the characteristics of the blockchain to minimize and distribute the cost of maintaining the system, it is well suited to projects that start small and run for a long time. It is especially useful for applications such as games and memberships.
Where do we come from?
The idea for this service has its origins in TRPGs such as “Dungeons & Dragons” (D&D) and TCGs such as “Magic: The Gathering” (M:tG). We were also inspired by “Loot Project,” a curious NFT consisting only of the names of eight items in a bag, and its derivative projects. Tokens that describe only minimal information, and the joy of users who hold them discovering for themselves how to play, have something in common with D&D and M:tG. In other words, “users themselves can own part of the game and become part of the game.” Inspired by these legendary titles, we envisioned a platform capable of describing a wide variety of “worlds.”
What are we?
A project owner first sets up their own “world” within T&T. Next, they create “NFTs accompanied by art,” and finally define “the actions NFT holders can take within the world.” These actions include “visiting a designated place,” “participating in an event,” “using an item,” and “buying, selling, or exchanging items,” and through the design of these actions, the owner can express the character of their service.
However, T&T does not perform the complex processing of the game itself. All T&T does is describe and record the objects that appear in a world. To use playing cards as an analogy, T&T records the suits such as spades and hearts and the ranks such as aces and kings, while the various ways of playing with them, such as poker and blackjack, are realized by other means. Implementing them as online applications is of course possible, and we think combining them with offline ways of playing using paper, pencils, and dice is also a very token-like way to use them.
Where are we going?
In addition to games that make use of the characteristics of the blockchain, T&T is also useful for introducing and managing membership programs. This is because its ability to define “the actions NFT holders can take within the world” makes it possible to express the behaviors desired of community participants. In this way, we envision a platform on which more general-purpose services, not limited to games, can be built.
Furthermore, so that users of these games and services can join easily, we have made it possible to use worlds built with T&T from accounts people use every day, such as Google and Apple. By deferring wallet registration and NFT ownership to a later step, anyone with a smartphone can participate.
T&T’s future plans also include connecting with AI. Going forward, T&T hopes to continue realizing, in an ever more accessible way, its defining feature: “users themselves can own part of the game and become part of the game.”
